SUSTAINABILITY

Sustainability at Cobb’s Hill Estate isn’t a buzzword. It’s a way of life deeply rooted in land care, respecting natural resources, and thoughtful winemaking. Every decision, from vineyard to glass, reflects our responsibility to future generations and the beautiful Adelaide Hills landscape we’re proud to call home.

VINEYARD & LAND MANAGEMENT

Our vineyard practices are focused on soil health, biodiversity, and minimal intervention.

  • Mid-row pastures are maintained to improve soil structure and prevent erosion, with minimal or no herbicide use.
  • Fertilisation is primarily organic, incorporating composted chicken manure and mushroom compost to enrich soil health.
  • A low-impact approach to pest and disease management is favoured. encouraging beneficial insects and microbes over chemical sprays.
  • Sheep and cattle are regularly grazed in the vineyards, helping to control weeds naturally, reduce input requirements, support soil vitality, and enhance the visual appeal of the vineyard landscape.
  • We are members of Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA).

WATER CONSERVATION

Water is a precious resource in the Adelaide Hills, and we take careful steps to conserve and reuse it wherever possible.

  • All vineyard blocks are irrigated via efficient drip irrigation systems.
  • Rainwater is harvested and used throughout the Cellar Door and Terrace Restaurant.
  • Treated wastewater is safely reused on the property to irrigate native plantings.

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

We are gradually transitioning our energy usage to more sustainable sources and technologies:

  • A 30kW solar power system helps offset our electricity use.
  • Our irrigation pumps operate on a variable speed drive, reducing power consumption during vineyard operations.

WASTE REDUCTION

Minimising waste is an ongoing focus, both in the vineyard and hospitality spaces.

  • Old vineyard posts are repurposed and donated to neighbouring farms.
  • Kitchen waste is composted for use in our gardens and vineyards.
  • Human wastewater is treated on-site and recycled to support the growth of native flora.

RESPONSIBLE INPUTS

We prefer organic and minimal intervention inputs wherever possible.

  • Herbicide use is minimal, and insecticides are avoided unless absolutely necessary.
  • Instead, we work with nature, encouraging biodiversity and supporting a healthy, self-regulating vineyard ecosystem.

PACKAGING

While we’re always looking to improve, currently our Cobb’s Hill Estate label wines are bottled in lighter-weight glass to reduce the carbon footprint of packaging and transport.

BIODIVERSITY & LAND STEWARDSHIP

Protecting the natural environment that surrounds us is key to who we are.

  • We have fenced off sensitive creek lines, removed invasive willow trees, and replaced them with native vegetation.
  • Additional wildlife corridors have been planted to encourage biodiversity and regenerate the landscape.

LOCAL & ETHICAL SOURCING

We believe in supporting our neighbours and showcasing the best of the Adelaide Hills:
  • Our kitchen works with local suppliers wherever possible, celebrating regional flavours and seasonal produce.
  • We aim to foster a shorter, more ethical supply chain, keeping our impact low and our connections local.

SUPPORTING COMMUNITY

We’re proud to contribute to a thriving local community by supporting a range of local events, community and sporting groups, and initiatives through sponsorships and donations. [Read More]
